Good afternoon,

Due to the temporary loss of Verizon phone and internet service, the Mammoth Lakes Police Department front counter will be staffed continuously by CERT members until the communication systems are fully restored. Anyone wishing to report a problem, but cannot get through on the phone to local officials, can report the problem in person to the Mammoth Lakes Police Station located at 568 Old Mammoth Road.

According to Mono County dispatch, the 911 system is working with land line calls being routed through the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department. 911 calls made on a cell phone go through the CHP Bridgeport office and are routed to Mono County Dispatch. However, the high volume of calls on AT&T lines appears to be causing delays.

Officials, encourage everyone NOT to test the 911 system, but make it available for emergencies ONLY.

Verizon is estimating that service will be restored by Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.

The Mono County Sheriff’s Department said the outage was caused “by a big-rig truck in the Round Valley area that took down several telephone poles, which resulted in the fiber optic line being cut in two places.”

Kind regards,

Stuart Brown

Recreation Manager & Public Information Officer

Mammoth Lakes Basin and Reds Meadow Road Plowing to Begin — Reds Meadow Road to Remain Closed During Cleanup Operations —

Release Date: Apr 20, 2012 Bishop, CA

Contact(s): Nancy Upham

Above average temperatures and a below average snowpack are allowing road plowing efforts to begin earlier than normal this spring. The Town of Mammoth Lakes will begin plowing roads in the Mammoth Lakes Basin on Monday, April 23. Opening of the Lakes Basin to vehicles will be dependent upon snow, ice and road conditions. The Lakes Basin will be open to pedestrian use while the gates are still closed. Visitors should avoid areas where equipment is removing snow or making road repairs. Visitors should also be aware of hazards in the area, such as wind damaged trees and lake ice that is particularly dangerous during the spring thaw.

CalTrans will begin plowing Highway 203 from Mammoth Mountain Inn to Minaret Vista on Monday, April 23. A single lane will be plowed for administrative access to Reds Meadow Valley to facilitate the cleanup and repair efforts from the November 30 wind event that blew over thousands of trees in the Reds Meadow Valley. Pedestrian and bicycle access on the plowed road will be allowed up to Minaret Vista, however all motor vehicles will be prohibited until the road is completely plowed and opened.

The Town of Mammoth Lakes, with assistance from Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, will begin removing snow, debris and trees from the Reds Meadow Road as soon as April 25. Forest Service, National Park Service, contractor and other crews will resume cleanup and repair efforts in the Valley as soon as the road is cleared.

Due to the complications and hazards associated with roadside cleanup, falling of trees, removal of loose rock and the repair of the road, pedestrian and bicycle access down the Reds Meadow road past the Minaret Vista Station will be prohibited beginning Monday, April 23. The closure will be in effect for the entire Reds Meadow Road and all developed recreation areas and campgrounds accessed by the road. The temporary closure will be lifted or modified upon the completion of cleanup and repair efforts. Hikers attempting to exit the Reds Meadow Valley should also be aware of this closure and make alternative plans. The Forest Service is asking that the public cooperate and respect this necessary closure to ensure their safety, as well as the safety of the crews working in the area. Anyone entering the closed area may be issued a citation. The closure is in effect to allow completion of cleanup and repair work so that the area can be opened as quickly as possible for normal summer recreation activities.

For more information, please call the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center at (760) 924-5500 or visit the Welcome Center next to the Mammoth Ranger Station, or call District Recreation Officer Jon Kazmierski at (760) 924-5503. http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/inyo/news-events/?cid=STELPRDB5364466

Here is a great Mtn Bike ride you can take today. Not many late April days will you find this route 98% melted out. Insane views make this a nice early season warm up ride. Take your camera on this adventure.

Knolls Loop Dirt Roads (Map B9)

Length – 10 miles Advanced/ Strenuous
This route begins at the Shady Rest Day Use Parking Area directly across from McDonalds. As you enter the Shady Rest Area you will notice a paved path to your left. We will use this path to get from the parking area to the start of this long ride. Please use the day use parking and not campsite parking.

Once your parked head back to the paved trail and ride down it 100 yards. Cross over the paved road next to the path and you will see a dirt single track this is the start of the fun. Next you will see there is a kiosk with a map of the Knolls Loop and surrounding Trails.

This Mountain Bike Route follows dirt roads with numerous side roads and variations. Most of the roads in this area loop back into each other or to the Sawmill Cutoff road, the Mammoth Scenic Loop or Hwy. 203 at some point. Sign mark the entire Knolls Loop so it is easy to follow this route. This ride offers up some views of the eastern sierra that are stunning and you will want to get off yur bikes and take a look and reflect. This ride get a rating of a 10 for dirt road fun.

Expect the snow line to be around 8200 feet on that date. This has been a dry winter so late summer and fall will see some of the small streams running exceptionally low. The good news is camping season will be epic this season. After last years winter in summer that is some real good news. Check out our Discover Mammoth Lakes Fishing Guide.

Mammoth Lakes Basin The basin is due to be plowed starting this Monday. There is only about 2-3 feet left after this dry winter. With warm temperatures we predict much of the basin to be melted out by mid to late may. We would expect that the road will open shortly depending on possible spring snow. We will keep you update here at DiscoverMammoth.com.
